A little more about...

me. My name is Sean Howlett

My History
I grew up in a small town just outside of Columbus, Ohio. It’s a very conservative little town of only about 20,000 residents. Growing up I lived in a neighborhood of one-story houses that had older couples with grown-up and moved-out kids. Having few neighborhood playmates, I spent most of my time back then playing Recreation League soccer, building legos, or playing with army men. My family traveled a lot; my nearest relative lives in southern Kentucky and I have grandparents in Montreal, Quebec and near Ft. Meyers Flordia. Needless to say, we didn’t lease our cars. A fun fact about me? I have had a photograph I took put on a Jones Soda Bottle label, and I currently have another one in consideration.

My Education
Throughout my primary and secondary schooling, I took a lot of math and science classes. I took all the advanced classes, and finished all the math my high school had to offer two years early. However, I had my first taste of video production in Middle School. We had a small studio with handicams, a VCR and a 4-source video switch that we used to go out live on CCTV. I was always the first to arrive in the mornings, and I set everything up. I tried to run everything too, but the advisor wouldn’t have that, she made me share the jobs with other kids!

My junior year in High School, I joined the “WGCH News Team”, which was a class that had students produce the morning’s announcements into a televised form and broadcast the show the televisions in the school. My first few days in there, I re-wired the entire booth to be more efficient. I taught myself how to use Final Cut v1.1 and was the envy of my other classmates who had to use iMovie to edit their packages. I always did better behind the camera than in front of it, particularly as mixer operator. I was one of the few that actually knew how to use it properly.

That was the year I decided to go to video production in college. Despite all of my previous math and science oriented schooling, I wanted to go into the business of movie-making! My Mom, expecting me to become an engineer of sorts, was a little difficult to bring along, but once she saw some of the videos I was making, she was much more accepting. I applied to the one-of-a-kind Ohio University Honors Tutorial College (HTC), and I was one of four people out of 250 applicants to be accepted into the HTC’s Telecommunications program.

My Future
After graduation, I would like to move to Vancouver, British Columbia and become a feature film or narrative television Cinematographer, working my way up from loader or an assistant camera.
